We need gold standards in dementia care and support
Dementia carers need support after a diagnosis
Investment in improved diagnostic tools needs to be matched by investment in the care and support available to families after a dementia diagnosis.
Today’s news about ongoing research into a reliable blood test to improve dementia diagnosis is to be welcomed. It’s important that dementia is in the headlines as it has a devastating impact on so many of us.
However, investment in improved diagnostic tools needs to be matched by investment in the care and support available to families after a diagnosis. Gold standards in dementia diagnosis are not enough. We need gold standards in care and support as well. Frances Lawrence, CEO, Dementia Carers Count
Too many dementia carers simply feel invisible, overwhelmed and alone. Too many carers do not receive any support after a diagnosis and are left struggling.
This is why we campaign for changes in dementia care and support.
We have recommended to the Casey Commission that after a diagnosis carers should have access to a single point of contact, who can guide and support them from the moment of diagnosis onwards.
We are also calling for more funding for social care so that carers get the support that they need.
In the meantime, our We See You campaign is a reminder to carers that they are not alone.
We know they are there and we are here to help.
