Sharing dementia carers’ views with the Casey Commission

What if dementia carers had a single point of contact for support?

We welcome the work of the Independent Commission for Adult Social Care, led by Baroness Casey, as it considers effective and sustainable reforms for adult social care.

With nine in ten dementia carers reaching crisis points, changes to available social care support cannot come soon enough.

While much exists on paper and within legislation, which should make a difference to carers, the reality is that support is not being delivered consistently on the ground and carers simply don’t have the time or the energy to advocate for themselves.
Frances Lawrence, CEO, Dementia Carers Count

Listening to dementia carers

Day in and day out we listen to dementia carers. We understand the struggles that many are facing. Many of our team members have experienced the challenges of caring for someone with dementia first hand.

We are delighted that the Commission is listening to unpaid carers. We would like to support the Commission to understand further the specific support needs of dementia carers directly from carers themselves.

What would make a difference to dementia carers

We have shared with Baroness Casey what dementia carers have told us would make the most difference to their ability to cope and their capacity to care.

Benefits of having a dementia care coordinator

A dedicated dementia care coordinator could make a huge difference to those caring for someone with dementia. This would mean that carers have a single point of contact if they want or need information and advice on anything ranging from legal matters, eligibility for benefits, understanding behavioural changes to accessing counselling, peer support and respite. Thank you for sharing your views

We’ve had very helpful feedback from carers about the benefits of having a dementia care coordinator as a single point of contact to support and guide you through your experience of caring for someone with dementia.
