Time to review Carer’s Allowance

We’re calling for a comprehensive review of Carer’s Allowance

It’s 50 years since the introduction of Carer’s Allowance and it’s high time for a review of how caring intersects with employment, social security, poverty, and financial security.

Our latest survey of dementia carers found that caring had a negative impact on many people’s finances.

Some carers have to give up work or reduce their hours because of their caring responsibilities.

At the same time, some carers tell us how household costs go up. This may be because the person they are caring for needs specific support such as continence products, or is no longer able to drive and requires buses or taxis to get around, or feels the cold more and they need the heating on.

Many carers say that they only get support if they pay for it themselves. Not everyone can do this, and one in two dementia carers are caring without any support at all.

It is high time that Carer’s Allowance and related benefits for carers have a comprehensive review. No-one should be caring alone without support. No-one should be struggling financially because they are a carer.
Helen Pyper, Head of Policy and Campaigns, Dementia Carers Count

We agree that Carer’s Allowance needs to be reviewed.

We are a co-signatory of an open letter which has been sent to the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions highlighting why a review of Carer’s Allowance is needed.

You can read the open letter that we have signed below.
