Local authorities are struggling with care costs – carers are too
Commenting on the Adult Directors of Social Services (ADASS) 2024 Autumn Survey, which reveals the extent to which local authorities are struggling with care costs, Frances Lawrence, CEO of Dementia Carers Count said:
“These latest findings from ADASS are deeply concerning as they highlight the ongoing and increasing pressures on local authorities to provide people with the care and support that they need. Despite most councils overspending on adult social care, we know that there are far too many people who are struggling without any support.
“Our research shows that only half of dementia carers are receiving an assessment of their needs, and less than a third of dementia carers have been able to access support when they have needed it.
“While costs are increasing for local authorities, they are also increasing for carers. It’s been estimated that the cost to families of caring for someone with dementia is £32,000 per year. Dementia carers are under huge financial and emotional pressures and a review and overhaul of the support that they should receive is far too long overdue.”
