The Government has launched a consultation on new workplace rights for unpaid carers, including proposals to improve employment protections and explore the case for paid Carer’s Leave.
Too many dementia carers are forced to reduce their hours, put careers on hold, or leave work altogether because the support simply isn’t there. Helen Pyper, Head of Policy and Campaigns, Dementia Carers Count
Too many dementia carers are forced to reduce their hours, pause their careers, or leave work altogether because the right support isn’t in place. Our 2025 survey of dementia carers found that 1 in 5 working carers have left work due to their caring responsibilities, highlighting the urgent need for change.
Carers consistently tell us they need greater flexibility, understanding from employers, and access to paid leave to help them balance work and caring.
Carers provide essential, unpaid care every day — often alongside paid employment and other responsibilities. They deserve workplace rights that reflect the reality of caring and the contribution they make.
We encourage carers to take part in the consultation and share their experiences to help shape future workplace rights and support.
