What if carers could choose the next priorities for legislation?

The King’s Speech sets out the Government’s agenda for the coming year.

Today, a total of 35 different pieces of legislation were announced by the King, with a focus on national and individual security. The priorities include:

• Communities feeling safe

• Tackling the cost-of-living crisis

• A fair deal for working people

• Renewal of public services

• Making the UK a country fair for all

• Reform of welfare system

These are all important priorities, but what about having a real focus on making the UK fairer for people who are looking after a family member or friend. Day in and day out.

Here are our suggestions for what’s needed without further delay:  

Legislation to introduce a single point of contact to support every dementia carer across the UK from diagnosis onwards.

Resources to ensure every carer has access to a Carer’s Assessment.

These assessments must recognise the responsibilities carers take on and unlock the personalised and adaptable support each dementia carer needs.

This should be available regardless of where the carer lives or their ability to pay.

Easily accessible and funded day and night respite, emotional and peer support, practical help, financial and legal advice to meet carers’ changing needs.

In work support including paid Carer’s Leave and an obligation on employers to provide flexibility for carers who wish to remain in the workforce.

Dementia training for all health and care professionals and front-line staff.
