New recommendations for palliative dementia care

New recommendations for palliative dementia care

 :  News

New recommendations for palliative dementia care must be acted on. End of life care must improve for those living with dementia and their carers.

Our CEO, Frances Lawrence, Julia Mazorodze, our Director of Communications and Growth, and Helen Pyper, our Head of Policy and Campaigns, attended a reception at the House of Lords, hosted by Baroness Finlay of Llandaff, for the launch of new policy recommendations for palliative dementia care from the Empowering Better End of Life Dementia Care programme – EMBED-Care

This six-year research programme has considered current and future needs for integrated palliative dementia care across the UK population. Bringing together collaborators, clinicians, policy makers, patients and families, the research reveals how to meet the physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs of people dying from dementia and their carers.

Dementia is the most common cause of death in the UK. Family carers have a massive role to play in supporting people with dementia at the end of life. It’s vital that they get the support that they need.

We provide emotional and practical support to dementia carers and our resources include information about how dementia carers can look after their own emotional well-being when they are struggling to cope.

Earlier this year, I visited the powerful Dementia Journeys exhibition, which emerged from EMBED-Care’s work. It shared stories of people, like Keiko, who have cared for loved ones dying with dementia. The exhibition, like these recommendations, prompts us all to consider the complexities of people’s needs and the importance of their wishes for end-of-life care.
