Who is this group for?

This online session is for unpaid carers who are struggling with the emotional impact of caring for someone with dementia.

We know that being in a caring role can provoke a range of strong emotions, like

  • anxiety
  • sadness
  • anger
  • frustration
  • guilt
  • grief
  • loneliness
Carers often talk about feeling isolated and worry that what they are feeling isn’t ‘normal’ or ‘ok’.

What will happen in the group?

This session will provide an opportunity for carers to meet, talk together about their shared experiences, and learn from each other that they are not alone.

This will be a safe space for family, and other unpaid carers of people living with dementia, to meet and share their experiences, challenges and feelings, and to learn from each other.

This group will give carers time to talk and share what they feel comfortable with, in the hope that they would feel more able to cope with this challenging situation.

Who is running this group?

The group will be facilitated by an experienced dementia services practitioner so that the group feels psychologically safe and supportive, and to support and help guide and connect carers.

Dr Gemima Fitzgerald, Clinical Psychologist

I help carers understand why they feel how they’re feeling. rnTogether, we consider what they can do to feel calmer and less overwhelmed.

Why do we offer this group?

In 2023 our carers survey told us that carers feel stressed and isolated. Connecting carers together is important for wellbeing and reducing isolation, and offering an online option to do this reaches carers who may find it difficult to attend groups in person.

One of the most isolating thoughts that many carers have is that no one else understands what they are going through. While it’s true that everyone’s individual experiences are different, there are some common themes that emerge time and time again for many carers.

This group can offer the space and time for carers to talk and to feel that they are listened to and supported, and to realise that they are not alone. It is a safe space to connect with others for emotional support.
