Online support group: Supporting the person with dementia to stay in their own home.

The next start dates for this fortnightly group will be:

Wednesday 19 June 6 – 7.30pm

Thursday 20 June 2 – 3.30pm

Number of sessions: 6

Frequency: Fortnightly – so every two weeks for 12 weeks until September

Who is it for?

This regular online peer support group session is for dementia carers who would like the person they care for to remain in their own home for as long as possible.

What is the group about?

Many carers would prefer that the person they care for remains in their own home for the duration of their dementia journey. However, this can often be challenging and stressful. This group can offer carers the space and time to feel they are listened to, whilst receiving practical advice, advocacy and emotional support.

We know that this can be a difficult journey for carers and can be accompanied by a rollercoaster of feelings and emotions. This will be a safe space for family and other unpaid carers of people living with dementia, to meet and share their experiences, challenges and feelings and learn from each other.

What will happen in the group session?

This Zoom session will give carers time to talk and share what they feel comfortable with, in the hope that they would feel more confident and less alone. You don’t have to talk if you aren’t ready, just come along and listen, and see if it’s for you.

What things might we talk about?

  • How can I deal with the risks of the person leaving the home?
  • How do I make my home dementia friendly and create an enabling environment for the person with dementia?
  • How can I access adaptations for the environment and equipment for those with mobility issues?
  • Can I get someone to stay with the person so I can do things like shopping or going to work?
  • Where do I start when thinking about getting a carer to support personal care?
  • How do I get respite care?
  • What can I do to support the person with sundowning symptoms?
  • How can I deal with incontinence effectively?

Who is leading the group?

The group will be facilitated by Lorraine Haining – an experienced specialist nurse practitioner who is there to support and help guide and connect carers.

Why we are running this group?

In 2023 our carers survey told us that carers feel alone and isolated. Connecting carers together is important for wellbeing and reducing isolation – offering an online option to do this reaches carers who may find it difficult to attend in person groups.

Do I have to come to every session?

We hope that this becomes a regular fixture in your schedule for as long as it’s helpful. But you don’t have to attend every session.

What to expect

All of our events are free to unpaid carers but we ask you to register so we know who’s coming.

Group sessions last up to 1.5 hours, and usually continue for as many months as participants want (on the same day and time each fortnight).

The groups are small and informal to ensure that everyone has the chance to ask questions and connect with other carers. We do like to see people’s faces but understand if you would like to keep your camera off.

There is always time built in to reflect on what we’ve discussed and, if you choose to, share how it relates to your own situation.
