Amazon Alexa Launches Guide for Dementia Carers
Dementia Carers Count and Amazon Alexa: Supporting Carers Through Technology
We’ve collaborated with Amazon to launch a free, practical guide for dementia carers. Featuring tips on using Alexa’s reminders, routines, and check-ins, it’s designed to ease daily pressures – with TV presenter Ruth Langsford lending her support to the campaign.
Why Voice Technology Matters for Dementia Care
Many carers juggle medication, appointments, and routines while supporting someone who may need help with memory or communication.
Alexa-enabled devices respond to voice commands – no screens, no buttons, just simple prompts.
This accessibility can be a huge benefit in the home for both carers and the people they support.
Meet the Guide: What’s Inside
Developed with input from carers, psychologists and health professionals, the Amazon Alexa Guide includes:
Photo frame and music features for comfort and memory stimulation
Drop-in calls to check in without needing a phone
Routines that help structure the day
and lots more!
What Our Research Reveals About Tech and Carers
The partnership aims to address a significant gap in carer support. Our research found that 71% of unpaid carers feel they don’t receive adequate support, with more than a third (36%) describing their caring role as a full-time, round-the-clock responsibility. During summer months, when regular support networks are often disrupted, tools like Alexa can help bridge the gap.
Some of the most helpful Alexa features highlighted in the guide include:
- Photo Frame functionality to display meaningful images on Echo Show screens
- Reminders for medication, hydration, meals, or appointments
- Drop In communication for instant, two-way check-ins with loved ones
- Adaptive Listening that recognises different voices in the home for personalised responses
- Shopping Lists that can be created and updated by voice
