How technology can help dementia carers

How technology can help dementia carers

There are many ways technology can help dementia carers – and our latest project with Amazon Alexa explores how voice-assisted tech can make everyday life a little easier for those caring for someone with dementia.

What is Amazon Alexa?

Amazon Alexa is a voice-powered AI (artificial intelligence).

You can speak to Alexa using Amazon’s Echo smart speakers and Echo Show screens – these are small electronic devices that sit in your home, like a speaker. You can also talk to Alexa through the Alexa app on your smartphone.

You can ask Alexa questions or give instructions by speaking out loud. You don’t need to press any buttons.

For example, you can say:

  • “Alexa, what time is it?”
  • “Alexa, play some music.”

It responds to spoken commands and can do things like:

  • Setting reminders
  • Playing music
  • Answering questions
  • Giving weather or news updates
  • Making calls or announcements

For carers of people living with dementia, it can help manage routines and provide support throughout the day.

I used it for reminders, for lists for booking appointments and for controlling devices in the home. Mike, Dementia Carer
