Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI)
Equity, Diversity and Inclusion – what it means to us
We’re here to support and listen to all dementia carers. So we need to listen to carers from a range of different communities and in different circumstances, to make sure our services meet their needs. That’s why we’re committed to building an organisation where everyone feels they belong.
As part of our commitment to EDI, we publish data on who works and volunteers for us, as well as who uses our services and responds to our survey. We do this so everyone can see how and whether we are upholding our commitment to building an organisation which listens to, works with and supports dementia carers from all walks of life.
Who works for Dementia Carers Count?
Our staff have diverse experience. Within our team, we have representation from people with many different kinds of lives. More than three quarters of staff have caring experience. We are actively seeking to work with younger people, those from a migrant community or who have experienced economic or educational disadvantage, who are underrepresented on our staff team.
Who volunteers for Dementia Carers Count?
Our trustees and members of our Carers Advisory Panel (CAP) have many different backgrounds. On the board of 9 trustees, half of board members have caring experience, and within CAP, naturally all the carers do. However, we would like to hear from more disabled carers, those within the LGBTQ+ or migrant communities, more younger carers and people who have experienced educational or economic disadvantage.
Who uses our services?
We measure how well we’re reaching carers from different communities by asking people to tell us about their backgrounds. Not everyone wants to do this, so our data is not always complete – response rates range from 13% to 100% depending on the question.
These figures are for 2025, when we didn’t consistently measure who was part of a faith, LGBTQ+ or migrant community. Nor did we measure educational or economic disadvantage, so we haven’t included those results here. We aim to do so during 2026.
Who responds to our Dementia Carer annual survey?
We also ask people who respond to our survey about whether they are in a rural or urban area, as we want to know how this affects whether dementia carers can access support and services.
