Here at Dementia Carers Count, we are committed to gaining a better understanding of the experiences and needs of family carers. Our ambition is to develop a comprehensive programme of research that will investigate interventions and outcomes for family carers in the hope of influencing their lives in a positive way. Whilst the body of research relating to family carers is growing, there are still a range of gaps in need of addressing. Our response has been to jointly-fund a Professor in Family Care in Dementia, Tracey Williamson. Tracey was appointed in November 2018 and is based at the University of Worcester in the Association for Dementia Studies.

A draft family carer research programme has been developed and is being thoroughly consulted on until July 2019. Meanwhile, Tracey is developing our operational processes to underpin the research we want to do and building in approaches for high quality Patient and Public involvement (PPI) in research design and undertaking. In this way we will ensure our research is grounded in the needs and priorities of family carers of persons living with dementia and helpful to them and those who support carers in the ‘real world’.

As our research activity grows, we will be adding more information and resources on these pages including our Research Plan, updates, blogs and videos.
