On behalf of all family carers of people with dementia, Dementia Carers Count welcomes the UK government’s decision to prioritise unpaid carers for COVID-19 vaccination. Having a vaccination will help people feel more confident in being able to visit their loved ones in care homes – something that carers have told us they desperately want and need; and a basic Human Right. We hope that this move will provide some much-needed ‘light at the end of the tunnel’ for family carers, and the opportunity to be reunited after almost a year of uncertainty.
Claire Goodchild, CEO, Dementia Carers Count comments:
Our carers have told us how important it is to them to visit their loved ones in care homes. This issue of access made possible through vaccination is vital for the health and wellbeing of the carer and the person with dementia. We’re in this together and are here to support family carers who care for a person with dementia, whether at home or in a care home.
